Final Exam: Summary
Day 14 is your final exam for the EMT Boot Camp. This written exam consists of 150 questions regarding all the material covered during the 13 days of Boot Camp instruction.
Psychomotor Test: Summary
Day 14 also includes the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) psychomotor test, which is half of the NREMT exam. The NREMT exam combines a psychomotor (physical/skills) test and a cognitive (written) test. Day 14 will include only the psychomotor test.
After successfully passing the final exam and psychomotor test and graduating from the EMT Boot Camp, you will need to schedule your own cognitive test at a Pearson VUE testing center. You will need to pass both parts of the exam (psychomotor and cognitive) before you can apply for NREMT certification and become a certified EMT.
The National Registry does not administer EMT psychomotor examinations. All EMT psychomotor exams are administered by either the State EMS Office or the training institution (with approval and oversight provided by the State EMS Office).
What’s On The Psychomotor Test
The NREMT psychomotor test will measure your ability to physically complete the responsibilities of an EMT. There are seven skill stations that you must pass on the psychomotor test (six are scheduled, and one is randomly chosen). All of the skills stations require both hands-on and verbal communication. You will have three attempts to pass all seven stations.
The psychomotor exam will assess your skills in the following six scheduled areas:
- Patient Assessment and Management – Trauma. Includes scene size-up, primary survey and resuscitation, history taking, secondary assessment, and reassessment.
- Patient Assessment and Management – Medical. Includes scene size-up, primary survey and resuscitation, history taking, secondary assessment, vital signs, and reassessment.
- BVM Ventilation of an Apneic Adult Patient. The exam will test your skills at bag-valve-mask (BVM)ventilation of an adult patient who isn’t breathing. Among other competencies, the exam will check for PPE precautions, check responsiveness, request additional EMS assistance, check breathing and pulse, open airway, prepare rigid suction catheter, and BVM ventilation.
- Oxygen Administration by Non-Rebreathing Mask. This portion will test your ability to administer oxygen using a non-rebreather mask. Among other competencies, this includes PPE precautions, assembly of the regulator to the oxygen tank, and attaching the non-rebreather mask to the regulator and patient’s face.
- Cardiac Arrest Management/AED. The exam includes a review of your treatment of cardiac arrest and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). PPE precautions, scene safety, checking patient responsiveness, requesting additional EMS assistance, checking breathing and pulse, chest compressions, CPR, and operating an AED.
- Spinal Immobilization (Supine Patient). This portion will also test your skill at properly immobilizing a patient with a spinal injury. This will include PPE precautions, directing an assistant to place/maintain head position, reassessment of motor, sensory, and circulatory function in each extremity, applying an extrication collar, directing movement of a patient without compromising the integrity of the spine, and more.
The psychomotor exam will also assess your skills randomly in 1 of the following 4 areas. You will not know in advance in which area you will be tested:
- Bleeding Control/Shock Management. This portion will test your ability to control bleeding and manage shock in several ways. These include PPE precautions, applying pressure to the wound, and applying a tourniquet. Also, this portion will test your ability to treat hypoperfusion.
- Joint Immobilization. This portion will test your ability to immobilize and manage an injured patient. This includes PPE precautions, manual stabilization of injury, assessment of injured extremity, splinting, immobilization of injury and bone above and below injury, and reassessment.
- Long Bone Immobilization. This portion will test your ability to immobilize and manage an injured patient. This includes PPE precautions, manual stabilization of injury, applying a splint, immobilizing the hand/foot in the position of function, and reassessment.
- Spinal Immobilization (Sitting Patient). This will include PPE precautions, directing an assistant to place/maintain head position, reassessment of motor, sensory, and circulatory function in each extremity, applying an extrication collar, directing movement of a patient without compromising the integrity of the spine, and more.
Day 14: Summary
Day 14 of EMT Boot Camp will include your final written exam for the program. It will also include the NREMT psychomotor exam. After passing NREMT psychomotor exam and graduating from the EMT Boot Camp, you will still need to schedule the second part of your NREMT exam, the cognitive exam.

As with the NREMT psychomotor exam, the EMT training you have received in this 14-day EMT Boot Camp should prepare you to excel on the NREMT cognitive exam. Of course, you will still need to study and review everything you have learned in the Boot Camp, and other relevant materials.
